Ibiza Town's local police have recorded 25 reports for suspected illegal tourist rentals this season, after carrying out at least 159 inspections of homes. The figures come from a statement by the town council, as reported by Noudiari from an EFE agency report.
On the most recent Sunday, officers drew up four new reports (actas) for possible irregularities in this activity. They also made two further sanction proposals backed by witness statements. In the same shift, two drivers who tested positive for drugs were also proposed for sanctions.
The work forms part of the fourth police shift, introduced in June to strengthen services during the busiest hours for tourism and nightlife.
Wider summer checks
Between 30 April and 16 October, officers also carried out 410 checks on passenger transport, looking for illegal taxis, irregular touting for customers and other infringements. According to the council, the sanction proposals in one of the summer operations reached €27,400.
The patrols also covered high-footfall areas such as the Marina, the port and Figueretes. There they ran road-safety, alcohol and drug checks and acted to make sure municipal ordinances were respected.
What it means
For owners with a licensed holiday let in Ibiza Town, the figures show that checks on homes are carried out regularly and continue late in the season. Having the tourist licence number in order, and displayed wherever it is required in listings, is the simplest way to be ready for an inspection.
For buyers considering a property in the town for holiday letting, the news is a reminder to confirm that a valid licence exists and can be transferred or used as intended before committing. Rules differ by municipality and by property type, so it is worth checking the position with the town council directly.
For visitors, a booking with a properly licensed property is the safer choice. The reports concern suspected infringements: the council's statement speaks of alleged irregularities, and the outcome of each case will depend on the sanction procedure that follows.
What to watch next
The council has not said in the statement whether the extra shift will continue after the summer. Owners and agents should watch for any update on inspection plans for the coming season, and for the final outcome of the sanction proposals now in progress.
