Balearic president Marga Prohens has asked the major international tour operators to put more flights on Ibiza and Menorca outside the summer months. According to Periódico de Ibiza, she raised the idea on Tuesday at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, where she met representatives of the big operators, TUI Group among them.

The aim is to improve air links in the shoulder and low seasons, so that tourism and business activity extend beyond the summer. Prohens said the strategy is meant to spread visitors across the year without adding pressure in the busiest months.

She pointed to a difference between the islands. Mallorca has gradually built up activity outside the peak season, while Ibiza and Menorca still depend largely on summer connections. In her words, "connectivity is still very seasonal" in Menorca and Eivissa, which makes it harder to lengthen the season and promote the middle and low months.

The president described better winter and spring flights as a shared request of the island councils (consells insulars) and the business representatives of both islands. The goal is not to raise airport capacity across the board, but to make it easier for visitors to arrive when activity slows and many businesses are closed.

Prohens argued that a longer season would mean more months of work, more job stability and more security for workers and small businesses, and would reduce dependence on the central summer months.

What it means

For owners of licensed holiday villas, more off-season flights could widen the periods when guests can reach the island easily, especially in spring and autumn. Nothing has been announced yet: the reports describe a request made to operators, not new routes or schedules.

For visitors planning a stay outside July and August, the practical point is to watch airline and tour operator schedules for the next winter and spring programmes, since direct connections are what shape the choice of dates.

For buyers, a season that runs longer supports year-round demand for well-located homes and for the restaurants, hotels and services around them. It is a point to follow, not a result yet.

Background

Ibiza's air traffic is concentrated in summer, and many hotels, restaurants and clubs close in the winter months. The regional government has linked seasonal adjustment to the wider debate on tourism pressure, and says it wants growth in the quieter months rather than more visitors at the peak.
